Adoption and Guardianship

Adoptions related photos (families and children)

The decision to adopt a child is a big step - a life changing decision which holds the promise of a happy, loving family - and an opportunity for children to grow up in a loving family.  There are several options available to families interested in adopting children in Alberta.  Find out about the options open to you.

All documentation pertaining to adoptions completed in the province of Alberta are sealed.  The Child, Youth & Family Enhancement Act determines the release of this information.

Children who cannot live with their biological parents need to have a guardian.  This may be a private arrangement between family members or an arrangement with the government for a child in permanent government care.

Any adult who has had the continuous care of a child for a period of more that six months may apply to the Court for a private guardianship order if the child or the applicant resides in Alberta. Find out more about the process.

If you were in the care of the government (guardianship) and want more information, or if you want to learn more about private guardianship of a child in the care of the government, this section will be helpful.
